Destination: Negara Brunei Darussalam (Bandar Seri Begawan, district of Temburong)
Date: 12 to 27 February 2009 (SAF Exercise Lancer)
Flight: Singapore Airlines SQ8992, SQ8991
Plane: Boeing 777-200

Time stops in Brunei. Okay so it does move, but one hour in Brunei feels like a day. It’s worse when I am doing outfield medical covers in the hot and humid Brunei jungle. A simple short walk or climb can soak me in sweat. But at times, it felt much better to be swinging in my hammock as compared to trying to sleep in the hot hot bunk back in Lakiun Camp. Exercise Lancer also gave me the once-in-a-lifetime experience of doing medical cover in a sampan (boat) lying in the middle of a river. And on the only day I was on such duty, it rained. Wet and cold. Splendid…

R&R began on the 26th of February. Set out early from Lakiun Camp in a very old bus which I believe is a Merc. The kind of old school buses still running around in Singapore. Took the fastcraft out of the district of Temburong to the capital. Transited at Jalan Aman Camp where we dropped our bags and had a short rest and breakfast before moving off for recreation proper.

First stop was the National Museum, which is actually a former mosque. Not as interesting as the museums in Singapore, but good enough to keep guests glued to its exhibits for an hour or so. Somehow there was a strong focus on ASEAN throughout. And of course, a gallery specially dedicated to its oil and gas treasures.

Next stop: water village. This is probably the most famous attraction in the country – typical kampong houses built on stilts in the middle of the big rivers or lakes. One may have had the misconception that only the poor live in such conditions but as we later found out from the tour guide, it turned out to be the reverse – the wealthier ones would live on the water! So much so that the governers had constructed proper electric and even sewage systems to these folks who could afford airconditioning and typical ASTRO cable TV satellite discs. The villages (yes, there are many of them) are self-sufficient. There are small markets, police and fire posts and even schools. All the houses are connected by a maze of walkways and almost every family has their own personal boat to zip around quickly.

We were treated to an open house of sorts at a village head’s home. Got to try out various types of kueh, sip some tea and take a peek at how the interior of the houses there looked like.

The last stop before lunch was a simple stopover to the country’s landmark, which is none other than the Masjid Sultan Omar Ali Saiffudin. This is the mosque depicted in the twenty dollar Singapore/Brunei note and is very much the only way the country showcases itself to the world. Not suprising considering it is made out of gold.

It was lunch soon after and we had ours buffet-style at some restaurant called Millennium. Their prata and curry were exceptionally finger-licking delicious! :D

Post-lunchtime is always a bad time. That’s when everyone starts to feel sleepy and sleep they did. Only the medics were enthu enuf to go on with the tour of the next attraction which was yet another mosque also partially clad in gold here and there, with marble from some European country to granite from another… it was like a small piece of every country in the world is represented in the mosque one way or another!
Grand indeed.

Next up was the sultan’s own personal museum. Yes, his own PERSONAL museum. How many people in the world even have that many valuables to display let alone fill an entire building. That’s where I also learnt the current sultan owns like 2000 cars in his two-storey football field-wide garage. And he’s still expanding his collection.

Everyone was looking forward to the next and final part of the itenary for the day: the free-and-easy. We were dropped off at the capital’s one and only shopping centre aptly named THE MALL. It looks big from the outside but there’s really nothing much inside… even Lot One shopping mall at Choa Chu Kang is more happening la. Contrary to what I’m told, the stuff sold there aint exactly cheaper than their counterparts sold in Singapore. And since there’s no difference in currency value, for better quality, I’d rather shop back in Orchard Road. Dinner was at the hotel restaurant just right next to the mall. Buffet style also. Not bad. Got chocolate cake :P

Decided to stroll over to nearby Gadong night market after The Mall bored me enough. This typical pasar malam is literally a night market. From food to fish to veggies to fruits to clothes etc. Lots of interesting food on sale but too bad dinner was still taking its time to run down my throat so didnt try much.

Gathered back at The Mall at about 8PM, went back to Jalan Aman Camp where we had a short sleep before moving out at around 2AM 27th Feb to the international airport for out flight back to Singapore…

And there you have it. Our relatively near but yet not very well known ASEAN neighbour. If you wanna have a short one day trip overseas, then visiting the capital Bandar Seri Begawan would fit the bill. Without even the need to stay in a hotel overnight :P Just don’t expect to do much shopping there. Even souvenirs are quite diffcult to locate… unless you know where the gift shops are.

And yea, not a place for bus enthusiasts with the hope of spotting buses hahaha.
